Yellowstone National Park is the veritable grandfather of the United States National Park system. In March of 1872, Yellowstone's 2.2 million acres became the very first area to earn official designation as a "national park," marking the beginning of a new movement in the United States dedicated to recreational tourism. Indeed, this vast, majestic wilderness, a habitat for hundred of thousands of species of animals and plants, was originally set aside not for conservation reasons, but as a playground for the American people.

Thankfully, Yellowstone National Park was no use as a recreational playground without the majestic natural features made famous by the ubiquitous paintings and black-and-white photographs created by Thomas Moran and William Henry Jackson, respectively, in the early 1870s. Thus, Yellowstone remains just as it was in 1872, with awe-inspiring geothermal features, abundant river valleys, and rolling plains teeming with bison. The only difference is that an extensive, well-maintained road system allows more than 2 million annual visitors to witness this vast western wilderness for themselves. This vast area covers parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and is truly a unique national treasure.

ONE VERY HOT POTATO: YELLOWSTONE'S GEOTHERMAL ACTIVITY

Aside from Yellowstone's standout geographical features like Yellowstone Falls and historical structures like the Old Faithful Lodge, Yellowstone houses more than half of the world's naturally occurring hydrothermal land features. Indeed, "supervolcano" is the scientific term for the Yellowstone Caldera alone, though volcanic activity today is limited to gaseous geyser eruptions, perhaps best exhibited by the famous Old Faithful geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin in the southwest area of the park. Of the 300 active geysers and 10,000 geothermic features in Yellowstone National Park, there is plenty to see, from Mammoth Hot Springs in the northwest corner of the park, to the Fountain Paint Pots on Firehole Lake Drive and the beautiful Morning Glory Pool, both conveniently located a short drive from Old Faithful.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Visiting the park may seem daunting, as the expansive acreage exceeds that of Rhode Island and Delaware put together! Many visitors enjoy Yellowstone's extensive campgrounds that offer both traditional campsites and RV hookups. A stay in one of Yellowstone's historic hotels, such as the Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Mammath Hot Springs, and the Roosevelt Lodge Cabins, allows your family to experience the history and comfort of the park from within! If a trip around the entire park does not seem feasible, pick just one of the six main areas of interest from:

  • Mammoth Hot Springs
  • Old Faithful
  • Grant Village and West Thumb
  • Yellowstone Lake, Bridge Bay Marina, and Fishing Bridge
  • Yellowstone's Grand Canyon
  • Roosevelt and Tower

WILDLIFE VIEWING

Yellowstone offers some of the best and most diverse wildlife viewing areas in the United States. From curious black bears to majestic elk and moose to the nimble coyote, the Yellowstone ecosystem is a thriving habitat for an impressive array of wildlife creatures. You might see bison, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and even an imposing grizzly bear on any given day, but anglers have an even bigger treat waiting for them. While the Yellowstone cutthroat trout is an angler's dream, rainbow, lake and brown trout flourish here as well. Come to Yellowstone and enjoy the great abundance that Mother Nature has to offer!

Reel Deal Anglers - Rhett Bain & his small team of guides offer access to private waters like no other service. Enjoy some seclusion on the Snake River and surrounding fisheries.
