Overview

Many families come to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks to see the Parks, but there is a wealth of other activities in the area that are family friendly. Regardless of the age, experience level or aptitude, there is a ton of summer fun for everyone.

What to do for Kids Summer Fun

Mountain Biking
If you didn’t bring your own bikes, check with the bike shops in Jackson to get fully equipped for a day or two of bicycling fun. There are many paved family friendly trails through out the valley. If the family is up for a little more challenge, try some of the mountain bike paths in the surrounding areas.

Fishing
Fishing with kids can be both challenging and rewarding. There are plenty of places where the fish are biting which will keep your youngsters from getting bored. Be sure to take your camera, so you can get that all famous photos of your child with their first catch.

Boating/Tubing
Grab an inner tube or two from the local tire shop and hop in Flat Creek for an easy and enjoyable tubing adventure right through Jackson.
For older kids, try paddling a canoe or kayak on a mountain lake. For younger ones, let them get their toes wet alongside a stream or lake shoreline.

Hiking
Take a family friendly day hike on any of the many trails in the area. Pack snacks or a picnic and make a longer day of it. Be sure to take lots of water.

Horseback Riding
Every child (and the child in all of us) loves the idea of riding a horse. Outfitters and guides can take the entire family on a ride from 2 hours to multi-day trips.

Horse Pack Trips
Every member of your family will enjoy an excursion on horseback into the wilds of the Grand Teton National Park region. Make it an overnight trip or stay out for several nights. It will make for an unforgettable summer!

Wagon Rides
There are age restrictions on horseback riding, however, children of all ages can enjoy jumping up into a buckboard or covered wagon and bumping along a mountain trail

Whitewater Trips
Kids love the thrill of a wonderful whitewater trip down the Snake River. However, there are age restrictions, which may vary according to current height of the water. Be sure to check with local outfitters and guides before planning this activity.

Scenic Floats
On a kayak, paddleboat or raft, take everyone on a scenic float. This is a great way to view wildlife in their natural surroundings.

Tram Rides/Scenic Chairlift Rides
Take the aerial tram to the top of Rendezvous Peak or choose to ride the chairlift to the top of Snow King.

Wildlife Expeditions and Tours
Have an experienced and professional guides take you and your family to the best wildlife viewing spots and point out all the wonders of this unique habitat.

Downtown Jackson
If you want to stick closer to town, there are varieties of entertainment options for kids of all ages.

Teton County Recreation Center
Swimming at the Teton County Recreation Center is available year-round, and includes a giant waterslide for kids and adults.

Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum
The whole family can learn about the fascinating history of the area and enjoy hands on activities. Children receive an activity book and can earn a sheriff’s badge.

Rentals and Fees

Sometimes it’s all you can do to get the entire family to one location without worrying about packing different gear for different activities. Don’t worry. If you plan on an activity that requires equipment, i.e. bikes, fishing gear, kayaks, canoes, etc, you will find rental outlets in all of the surrounding communities.

The cost of renting the equipment and any permits and fees associated with any activity varies. We recommend that you plan some activities in advance of your arrival and further investigate their cost prior to getting to the area.

The best way to explore any area is with an experienced and knowledgeable guide. National companies and local vendors offer family friendly tours, which can incorporate one activity or several.

A guided tour, whether it be biking, hiking, rafting or something else entirely, takes all the planning and stress out of the process. All you need to do is show up and have fun!
